Open Positions

The DISA laboratory team, headed by prof. Zezula, is formed by senior and postdoc researchers, PhD students, and also bachelor and master students who are given the opportunity to learn and participate in high-level research. Don’t hesitate to contact any of us if you are thinking about joining our lab!

Bachelor and Master Students

Any students interested in working in our lab are welcome! A brief warning – you shouldn’t be afraid of Java programming and occasional hard work. If you are still interested, you may want to check our offer of bachelor and diploma thesis themes. You can also contact any of the lab members and come to discuss your own ideas or questions.

PhD Students

We are looking for motivated PhD candidates willing to work in the area of advanced searching methods for digital data. Possible topics for PhD research include the following:

  • Ranking and Relevance Feedback in Image Retrieval
  • Similarity Search Architectures for WEB Databases
  • Self-Organized Search Networks
  • Computational Advertising
  • Clustering and Categorization in Metric Spaces
  • Similarity Search Applications: video, audio, music
  • Similarity Searching: Beyond the Metric Space
  • Data Cleaning and Integration
  • Collaborative Filtering
  • Performance Tuning on Distributed Hardware Infrastructures
  • Approximative Similarity Search
  • Dimensionality Reduction Techniques

Students interested in any of these (or related) topics are welcome to contact prof. Zezula.

Special call for PhD students

Up to 3 PhD student positions available at the DISA Laboratory (FI MU Brno) within an ambitious research project on Searching, Mining, and Annotating Human Motion Streams. The advantages of these PhD positions are:

  • collaboration with experienced lab members on this topic, and
  • additional financial support from the project resources.

The positions are opened from January 2019 until filled. In case of any interest, contact prof. Pavel Zezula ( for more information.

Post-doctoral open call at DISA lab, Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University

The laboratory of Data Intensive Systems and Applications (DISA) is seeking a candidate for Post-doctoral positions. The broad scope of DISA is to explore theories and technologies for next generation similarity search. This should be able to deliver relevant information effectively and efficiently to interested parties in the presence of exponentially growing volume, variety, and velocity of digital data. The DISA objectives are foundational in nature – we address the theoretical limits of similarity search in context of the Big Data Problem, considering the multimedia data as the primary proof of concept platform. The laboratory includes not only active researchers working on projects, but closely cooperates with students and disseminates results in practice.

The topics and objectives of the DISA lab can be summarized as follows:

  • databases and data processing
  • similarity indexing and searching
  • content-based multimedia retrieval
  • similarity data analytics
  • processing of biometric data (movement characteristics, processing Motion Capture Data)

More details about the postdoctoral positions can be found here. You can also directly contact prof. Pavel Zezula, or assoc. prof. Vlastislav Dohnal, Please use the subject “Postdoc 2019”.
